THOUGHTS TO CONSIDER (Exodus 40:16-30, 34, 38): 16 Thus did Moses: according to all that the LORD commanded him, so did he. • Did: (עשׂה ʿā•śā(h) Qal Imperfect) = carried out or performed an action or a course of action. • Moses: (מֹשֶׁה mō•šě(h)) = the Levite son of Amram-Jochebed, (Exodus 2:10-Deuteronomy 34:12. Questions: • Discuss how Moses came to be part of Pharaoh’s household and how his royal upbringing prepared him to do the will of God. • Why is it significant that the phrase, “the Lord commanded,” appears six times in this Scripture lesson? • List and discuss three additional Biblical examples of obedience and disobedience. What did you discover? • How can we remain within the will of God? 17 And it came to pass in the first month in the second year, on the first day of the month, that the tabernacle was reared up. • It came to pass: (היה hā•yā(h) Qal Imperfect) = It happened; it occurred. • First: (רִאשׁוֹן ri(ʾ)•šôn) = indicating the beginning unit in a series. • Month: (חֹ֫דֶשׁ ḥō•ḏěš) = lunar time period; the period between successive new moons. • Year: (שָׁנָה šā•nā(h)) = an Israelite period of twelve lunar months. • Tabernacle: (מִשְׁכָּן miš•kān) = a portable sanctuary which the Israelites carried in the wilderness after the Exodus. Questions: • Why should we recall the time and place of significant events in our life? • When did you obtain or construct your current facility? • Why should we have a dedicated place of worship? • When were you saved? Under what circumstances? 18 And Moses reared up the tabernacle, and fastened his sockets, and set up the boards thereof, and put in the bars thereof, and reared up his pillars. • Reared up: (קום qûm Hiphil Imperfect) = set up, erected, constructed, or built. • Fastened: (נתן nā•ṯǎn Qal Imperfect) = put or placed. • Sockets: (אֶ֫דֶן ʾě•ḏěn) = the foundational support for a structure. • Set up: (שׂים śîm Qal Imperfect) = placed. • Boards: (קֶ֫רֶשׁ qě•rěš) = framework; a structure supporting or containing something. • Put in: (נתן nā•ṯǎn Qal Imperfect) = erected. • Bars: (בְּרִיחַ berîaḥ) = a crossbar; a finished piece of wood for supporting and holding a frame together. • Pillars: (עַמּוּד ʿǎm•mûḏ) = tall, vertical, cylindrical structures standing upright and used to support a structure; in an extended sense can support things like the Earth. Questions: • Why should we obey God’s instructions in every detail? • Did Moses construct the tabernacle by himself, or did he have help? • Why is it acceptable for the outcome of a project to be attributed to a specific leader, although many individuals contributed to the task? • Why are foundations necessary? 19 And he spread abroad the tent over the tabernacle, and put the covering of the tent above upon it; as the LORD commanded Moses. • He spread abroad: (פרשׂ pā•rǎś Qal Imperfect) = opened from a closed or folded state. • Tent: (אֹ֫הֶל ʾō•hěl) = a portable shelter, usually made of fabric or animal skin stretched over supporting poles and fastened to the ground with ropes and pegs. • Put: (שׂים śîm Qal Imperfect) = moved and set into a certain place or abstract location. • Covering: (מִכְסֶה miḵ•sě(h)) = an object that encases or envelops a structure. • Above: (מַ֫עַל mǎ•ʿǎl) = on top of. Questions: • Why is obedience an essential part of our walk with God? • What is the practical purpose of having a tabernacle in the midst of God’s people? 20 And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and set the staves on the ark, and put the mercy seat above upon the ark: • He took: (לקח lā•qǎḥ Qal Imperfect) = got into his hands physically; placed; put. • Testimony: (עֵדוּת ʿē•ḏûṯ) = a written copy on stone of the precepts and stipulations of the covenant given to Moses. • Ark: (אֲרוֹן ʾǎrôn) = chest or box; a box with a lid that is used for storage, usually large and sturdy. • Staves: (בַּד bǎḏ) = carrying poles; relative long and slim pieces of wood. • Mercy seat: (כַּפֹּ֫רֶת kǎp•pō•rěṯ) = atonement cover; an ornamental lid that covers the Ark of the Covenant and was a symbol of where sins were forgiven by God. Questions: • What process does God use today for the forgiving of our sins? • Why is the Ark of the Covenant containing the Testimony and the Mercy Seat important? 21 And he brought the ark into the tabernacle, and set up the vail of the covering, and covered the ark of the testimony; as the LORD commanded Moses. • He brought: (בוא bwʾ Qal Imperfect) = he took something with himself somewhere. • Vail: (פָּרֹ֫כֶת pā•rō•ḵěṯ) = a tent curtain that functions as a wall in a tent. • Covering: (מָסָךְ mā•sāḵ) = a screen partition consisting of a decorative frame or panel that serves to divide a space. • Covered: (סכך sā•ḵǎḵ Hiphil Imperfect) = surrounded completely (as with a fence or wall). NOTES: On the Table of Showbread, the priests placed twelve loaves of bread made from fine flour, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. The loaves were a continual reminder of the everlasting promises between God and the children of Israel, and a memorial of God’s provision of food. The bread was eaten by Aaron and his sons and was replaced every week on the Sabbath. Questions: • For what purpose was this table used? • How is it possible for people to create or build something they have never seen before? 23 And he set the bread in order upon it before the LORD; as the LORD had commanded Moses. • He set: (ערך ʿā•rǎḵ Qal Imperfect) = he arranged or put into a proper or systematic order. • Bread: (לֶ֫חֶם lě•ḥěm) = food made from dough of flour or meal, whether leavened or unleavened. • Before: (פָּנֶה pā•ně(h)) = in front of or in the presence of. NOTES: The Bread of the Presence consisted of 12 very large loaves, each made of 1/5 ephah of fine flour. Since an ephah was just over a bushel, two and a half bushels of finely ground wheat were required to make the 12 loaves. They were sprinkled with frankincense, arranged in two rows, the one leaning against the other, and placed on the table of showbread (Leviticus 24:5–9). Arranged in that way the bread became an “offering of food” to the Lord. The loaves were changed weekly on the Sabbath day. The Bread of the Presence was used as an offering to God. Questions: • Why are order and tradition essential components of our relationship with God? • Discuss how obedient you are to the commands of God concerning your life. 24 And he put the candlestick in the tent of the congregation, over against the table, on the side of the tabernacle southward. • Candlestick: (מְנוֹרָה menô•rā(h)) = a narrow, elevated support for holding a lamp or lamps; this item usually had a base, a stem-shaft, and a holder for the lamp. • Over against: (נֹ֫כַח nō•ḵǎḥ) = opposite or in front of. • Side: (יָרֵךְ yā•rēḵ) = a place within a region or structure identified relative to a center or reference location. • Southward: (נֶ֫גֶב ně•ḡěḇ) = south conceived of as the direction toward the Negev, which was to the south of the land of Israel; southward = toward the direction that lies directly to the right of somebody facing the rising sun or that is located toward the bottom of a conventional map of the world.
