You may be able to demonstrate that something exists - TopicsExpress

You may be able to demonstrate that something exists (empirically). You may be able to demonstrate why something is likely to exist (logically). You cannot prove that something does not exist either empirically or logically. You can only demonstrate why you BELIEVE that something does not exist and that requires FAITH. You can explain why you believe a particular kind of something doesnt exist - even though it obviously exists in stories, in paper, in art, and in the minds of people - but you cannot demonstrate or logically explain why a broad and often mutually exclusive set of things that use the same, or similar, terminology do not exist. Not only do probabilities and statistics work against you, but certain objects are, by very definition, inherently and obviously real. If, for instance, you say balls, of the sports variety, are not real, some people may agree with you, because they have never seen any. They have no reason to believe that they are real even though many people insist that they do. You may be able to logically demonstrate why a particular type of ball doesnt exist, but you will never be able to prove that no balls exist. Likewise, consider Santa. From the time were about eight, people tell us, Santa isnt real. As we mature, we are deemed unwise, socially unfit, and perhaps even mad for insisting that Santa exists. Yet every year, Santas appear everywhere - on street corners, in shopping centers, on the pages of books and magazines, on television and in movies. The issue isnt whether or not Santa (or Santas) exists, but what is the nature of his existence? In like manner, someone may say, I worship Mother Earth. You obviously cannot prove and hopefully will not try to demonstrate that Earth is not real. You may say, Earth is nothing more than a rock floating in space - not a Goddess. I, as an one who reverences the Earth just as it is, would disagree. I KNOW Earth is a rock floating in space. Thats all Earth needs to be. The decision to view Earth as a Goddess is my own. I do not assign her any special powers or the slightest bit of cognitive abilities or the ability to answer prayer or appreciate religious services, but you have neither the right nor the ability to deny someone else her or his perspective
