You may be surprised to see me giving glory to God regarding athletics. The most concise explanation I can give you rests in the doctrine that we should give thanks to God in all things. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you, (1 Thessalonians 5:18). The same teaching comes up in multiple passages (Ephesians 5:20, Romans 14:6, 1 Corinthians 10:30). Thanking God is huge. But the crux of this question really comes down to living a compartmentalized Christianity. I detest the idea and I dont think its biblical. I dont think its right. People will say, Well, you shouldnt conflate the spiritual and the secular. Id argue that there is very few things you can safely regard as secular. God made all things; therefore, we should give thanks to God in all things and everything we do should bring glory to God. This idea of a compartmentalized Christianity bothers me. To take it to an extreme, one could say you should relegate God to Sunday and tend to your business the rest of the week. That is what Paul would call dung. If God is so great and powerful, than he deserves for us to be mindful of him in all that we do. One might say that youre glorifying God for something he didnt do or didnt have his hand in. The University of Michigan doesnt preach Christ. And to further that argument, I think if you were to take a closer look at the curriculum at UM, youd find an overall tone of anti religion nearly across the board. And though I took a moment to further the opposing argument, youll forgive me if I destroy it completely. If I were to wait for a moment in which the event taking place were 100 percent pure and unmistakably God, Id be waiting a long time. And heres my point. If that is the proper approach, then Gods involvement and interest in our lives is microscopically small. And if that is the case, we dont really need God. We got this. Our Gods really not that big. I do not believe that and will not. So while some people will say leave God out of it, I will say thats entirely the problem. People have managed to live lives completely apart from God. Theyve convinced themselves that God really doesnt exist or at least has very little relevance to their lives. That stance, though, is a chimerical one. Michigan athletics, according to Lloyd Carr the day he stepped down as head coach of the University of Michigan football in 2007, was founded on a foundation of and always will be about winning with integrity. And while UM is not perfect, it does represent so many good things, not the least of which is winning with integrity. And in a world full of bad dealings and poor examples, we can rejoice in that.
