You may have noticed portrait posters popping up around the city featuring some of our local ABC Open storytellers. I encourage you to go for a walk around the city this weekend and see how many you can find. ABC Opens Faces of Townsville Outdoor Exhibition. Details to get you curious... The exhibition is a partnership between ABC Open and the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery and coincides with The Percivals, a city-wide festival celebrating portraiture. Running until July 13 Faces of Townsville gives locals the opportunity to be a part of the festivities. The local portraits for the exhibition were created as a part of ABC Open’s Snapped project. Each month Snapped creates a challenge to help amateur photographers to learn new techniques. Snapped recently asked photographers to take portraits that captured the many faces of Australia. More than 1000 portraits were submitted, including many from North Queensland. Faces of Townsville can be seen in nine locations in the CBD, in Flinders Square, Castle Hill, The Strand and at James Cook University. North Queenslands ABC Open producer Michael Bromage worked with local contributors to create and curate the photos. He said, The Faces of Townsville outdoor exhibition celebrates local writers, photographers and filmmakers who actively contribute stories about our community to ABC Open. Cool quotes from participants... Im really excited about the entire concept, I think its a way to personalise Townsville and bring more positivity to the community,” said exhibition participant Marion Walker-Campbell. Being part of the exhibition is really exciting. Who would have thought my face would be up on a wall in the city! - Helen Griffiths. The face is the window of the soul and Brunos face beams with 80+ years of loving, caring and giving. - Bruce Muller (photographer.) It is a pleasure to be able to participate in the ABC Outdoor poster exhibition promoting a wonderful event in such a fun local larrikin way. - John Sheil (photographer.) As an amateur photographer, I am super excited to have some of my portraits chosen to be a part of this outdoor exhibition! - Anita Moore (photographer.) Sharing my stories through ABC Open has given me the belief that I can do this! And this exhibition is a great way of letting others know, you can do this too. - Jan Wallis “I am thrilled to be a part of this exhibition and to have my “faces in places” that I never thought they’d be” - Jenny Underwood (photographer.) ABC Open has allowed me to take my part-time hobby and turn it into a meaningful passion! - Gregg Savage (photographer.) I am excited to be part of this exhibition as photography is a new art form I am exploring, which can be utilised across many platforms. I like the partnership and collaboration and the fact that the works are outside of the gallery walls into public spaces where a wider audience can engage with them (or not) on a daily basis (a little like social media!) - Margot Douglas. Knowing the scale at which the faces would be printed, I found it intriguing and a little bit alarming to both take photographs and to be photographed. - Lynn Scott-Cumming. It feels like such a privilege to have a photo I have taken to be recognised in such a way. Its bigger than anything I thought would ever come out of such a small hobby. - Jayde Baguley. Shane Fitzgerald, Manager Gallery Services, said the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery was proud to partner with such a dynamic and inclusive project, which adds to the massive Townsville celebration of portraiture that is The Percivals.
