You may know by now that Ashton has Duchenne but do you really know what Duchenne is? Duchenne is the most severe form of the nine different muscular dystrophies. Also referred to as DMD it is a progressive muscle wasting disease with no cure or effective treatment. It is a genetic disease passed on by mom affecting primarily only boys. A little over one third of cases are the result of a random mutation. After Ashton was diagnosed I found out that I am a carrier. We have no known family history of Duchenne. Duchenne is caused by a mutation to the largest human gene which contains 79 exons that encode over 3500 amino acids needed for the dystrophin protein. This lack of dystrophin causes muscle cells to be easily damaged and not able to repair, as this happens muscles are replaced by fat and scar tissue.
