You see, while spiritual transformation and renewal is God’s goal for us, we have to share in that goal. He will never force renewal upon us—it must be God’s work with which we cooperate. This requires that we shed all those things that inhibit God’s transformation in us... For some, the barriers may include spiritual pride and arrogance. For others, spiritual passivity. Some may be defending themselves against renewal by pretending to be strong and independent; others by thinking themselves weak and useless. Habitual sin is an excellent protection against transformation as is busy-ness that leaves no room for renewal. Self-loathing and an overwhelming self-love are equally effective. Whatever our own barriers are, we must take them down brick by brick so that God’s transformation might reach in.
