Youd never ask a doctor to consult for free. Plumbers dont come in to fix leaks for free. Walking out of a grocery or clothing store without payment is akin to theft. So why is it considered okay by the general public, editors of some papers and others to think that writers should write for free, authors should send books to you free? Protocol suggests you commission work, arrange a quotation, come to an agreement and work from there. Easy as that. Ive lost count of cases Ive heard of where artists are exploited in various ways. Some time back, Rapport commissioned me for various book reviews and interviews, including one where I telephonically interviewed Serdar Ozkan on his novel, and then refused to pay. And then their team won progressive journalism awards. The lack of ethics is unacceptable, both from media outlets as well as general public. The rot runs deep. Comments welcome.
