Young Loons triumph in Youth Cup Forfar Athletic’s decision - TopicsExpress

Young Loons triumph in Youth Cup Forfar Athletic’s decision to progress most of last year’s Under 19 squad into their newly formed Development League side was further vindicated at Station Park tonight when their youngsters recorded a superb 1-0 victory over a full-time Inverness Caledonian side in the second round of the Scottish Youth Cup. It was a great all round team performance from the home side who matched their visitors in every department. After a hard fought but goalless first half, the ‘Loons’ took the lead in the 55th minute. Paul McLellan the only player in the home ranks who is on a professional contract ran on to a superb through ball from Kerr Hay, before showing great composure in lobbing the ball from all of twenty yards over the advancing Daniel Hoban in the Caley goal. To be fair the visitors forced the home rearguard into some excellent last ditch tackles as they went for an equaliser and also struck the woodwork on one occasion, but McLellan and Cameron Clark were unlucky not to add to the homesters goal tally before the final whistle. There is no doubt that the result will be a great boost not only for the players in the Station Park squad, but also for the coaches and all involved in the youth set-up at the club. The third round draw will be eagerly anticipated with ties due to be played in early November. Quite a few of the youngsters on show tonight will be back in action on Tuesday night of next week at Station Park when Alloa Athletic are the visitors in the SPFL Development League. Forfar lined up –John Bonnar, James Yates, Michael Kennedy, Andrew MacKenzie, Ben Smith, Jack Neave, Paul McLellan, Chris Snee (Aaron Kane), Calum McConnell, Kerr Hay, Cameron Clark. Subs not used – Frank Devine, Rudi Brown, Max Reid, Jason King (gk)
