YoungMan Running : Hi Corey, and good morning from frozen Alberta. CH: Good morning Justin. What´s up with your Oilers.¿¿ They need Gretzky back eh! YMR: My question is, do you feel that the legal battles that were going on in the background during the Young Man Running and BANG! albums were the reason why no North American tour was ever announced and why only two videos were created for each album during this time? CH: They do not call it the ´music business´ for nothing. When ¨In Your Soul¨ failed to reach Top 10 status on the US Billboard Single charts it set in motion a falling dominoes of career setbacks for yours truly. The album was immediately shelved in America without a second single ever being issued. It´s hard to tour when your label closes shop. It was devastating that an album which represented so much of my musical heart IE- ¨Chase The Sun¨ & ´In Your Soul¨ could be so easily relegated to the barren wastelands. ´Spot You In A Coal Mine´ & ´Don´t Take Me To The Racetrack´ were both tracks on YMR, I honestly believed were potential US commercial hits. In fact, US superstar manager Freddy Demann (who managed me for a brief 6 months in the lead up to ´Young Man Running´s release) had picked ´Racetrack´ as first US single. If EMI Manhattan had listened to him perhaps we would have initiated a different outcome. Only two singles from two separate albums signalled the final nails in the EMI Aquarius CH coffin. When Bang! was released I believe a concerted effort was given to break the lead single ´Little Love´ in USA. It just did not happen and once again my US record company decided to shut things down. One may ask: How many talented and worthy artists are never even given the chance to sign a deal or record an album let alone bemoan it´s lack of success commercially or lament the white flag attitude of a label. So it goes & So I go. Nice chatting with you Justin..I remember you from my Sony promo trip to Edmonton 1996. How earnest & sincere young man you were while meeting me at the radio station. Pam Fullname Thank you for putting your heart and soul into Corey Hart Chasing The Sun, and thank you for gifting us with this supremely generous opportunity to ask questions. CH Your most welcome Pam. I heard you got nicknamed ´Canadian Treasure´ eh¿ PF: I spent quite a bit of time wondering why a satisfactory question wasnt coming to me. At last, I had an epiphany: your labour of love has left me wanting for nothing. And so finally my question revealed itself. Now that some time has passed for you since being immersed in the creation and production of your beautiful publication, and given the opportunity, what would you include in the book that it does not already contain, if anything? CH: Hmm.. I would write about the unbelievable turn of events regarding my concert & Hockey playoffs in Montreal with May 31 suddenly being shifted to June 3rd. It was one of the most difficult decisions I ever confronted during my career. I held the line hoping for everything to work out but alas I had to choose between two negative options. I realized the ramifications were enormous not only for my fans financially,logistically but also for the very integrity of the concert itself. I caught a horrible cold in the days leading up to the decision. I´m convinced it was caused by the weight of enormous pressure and anxiety as we worked long hours in rehearsals knowing an impending train wreck was potentially around the corner. As time travels forward invariably new stories reveal themselves. All in all though, I believe the book is very comprehensive up to the point of where I left off. Greg Gorman Hello Corey and Caravan, GG I am kindly suggesting that you only answer one of the following two questions CH Phew. GG: should I make the cut. In the opening pages you wrote: Fredrick Nietzcsche asked, which is it? Is man one of Gods blunders, or God one of mans blunders? I dont really know ......and later: I am a paradox man This makes me wonder about your spiritual beliefs but leads me to think that you take what Richard Dawkins says in his book, The God Delusion, that, even though he confesses to be an atheist, admists that the most logical belief is that of an agnostic; that one really cant know with 100% certainty what force makes up the cosmos and that no religious can be indubitable. CH: There is some truth to this. But what constitutes religion? Is it love,faith,reverence,respect,ritual....retribution, revenge,hate to those who are born adhering to another. It´s all quite murky, confusing. GG: In your defense for not wanting to answer the above question, I quote you on page 5: I have never hedged or ducked a question, but consistently chose where to draw the borders out of propriety, integrity or old fashioned manners. Some things are better left unsaid. CH: Mr Gorman...I truly do not know the answer. If compelled however to make some expression of where my mind lies or thereabouts, It rests in the belief that some elevated spiritual force has guided me through life. Even if I´m gravely mistaken,it still seems plausible given the path of my journey to hold this conviction to be true. In the end, There is no harm in believing,is there.? I quote from Chapter 17. ¨I begrudge God nothing because there is no God.Yet, why do I kneel down and call on him for mercy or salvation whilst my weary heart keeps beating, breaking over and over again? I stopped questioning. I wanted to believe God exists, even if she doesn’t¨ I suppose wanting to believe means,I do believe.
