Youth believe ANC can deliver better than DA – survey 10 June 2013 13:18..... City Press.... Young South Africans are more likely to believe that the African National Congress will be better at delivering services than the Democratic Alliance, a survey by Pondering Panda has revealed. This is despite the belief by young South Africans that the ANC is a significantly “more corrupt” political party. “It’s clear that even though the majority of young people feel the ANC is more corrupt than the DA, they do not see political corruption as a barrier to service delivery …” said Pondering Panda spokesperson Shirley Wakefield. The survey was conducted among 1 507 respondents, between the ages of 18 and 34. Respondents were interviewed across South Africa, and asked about their opinion on political corruption and service delivery. All interviews were carried out on cellphones between May 27 and 31 2013. Responses were weighted to be nationally representative in terms of age, gender, and race. Three in five respondents (60%) felt the ANC was more corrupt than the DA. In comparison, 15% of the respondents said the DA was more corrupt, and 16% felt both parties were equally corrupt. On the question of who would be better at maintaining roads, building hospitals, and taking care of the electricity and water supply, 35% said the ANC would be better, compared with 25% who favoured the DA. About 27% believed all political parties were the same in this regard. “In the case of the DA, it also shows that simply being seen as less corrupt does not necessarily win the trust of young voters,” she said. The survey revealed differences of opinion according to racial groups. About 41% of young black South Africans believed the ANC would be better at service delivery, compared with 17% who said the DA would do a better job. Sixty-six percent of whites said the DA would be better at maintaining infrastructure and delivering services. About 50% of coloureds and 48% of Indians shared the same sentiment. In terms of regional differences, the ANC was believed to do better than the DA in all but two provinces – the Western Cape and Gauteng. In the Western Cape, 43% of respondents saw the DA as being better at service delivery, compared with 23% who favoured the ANC. In Gauteng, 31% favoured the DA in this regard, compared with 27 percent who favoured the ANC. There was little difference of opinion among age and gender groups.
