Youth have faith in ANC South Africa Monday 10 June 2013 - 2:57 PM A survey by Pondering Panda has revealed that young South Africans are more likely to believe the ANC to be better at service delivery than the DA. Picture: AFP Johannesburg - Young South Africans are more likely to believe the ANC to be better at service delivery than the DA, a survey by Pondering Panda has revealed. This was despite the belief by young South Africans that the African National Congress was a significantly "more corrupt" political party. Pondering Panda spokesman Shirley Wakefield said "it’s clear that even though the majority of young people feel the ANC is more corrupt than the DA, they do not see political corruption as a barrier to service delivery". The survey was conducted by the consumer insights company among 1507 respondents, between the ages of 18 and 34. Respondents were interviewed across South Africa, and asked about their opinion on political corruption and service delivery. All interviews were carried out on cellphones between May 27 and 31 2013. Responses were weighted to be nationally representative in terms of age, gender, and race. Three in five respondents (60 percent) felt the ANC was more corrupt than the DA. However, 15 percent of the participants said the Democratic Alliance was more corrupt, while 16 percent felt both rival parties were equally corrupt. On which party would be better at maintaining roads, building hospitals, and taking care of the electricity and water supply, 35 percent believed the ANC would be better, with the DA garnering 25 percent. "In the case of the DA, it also shows that simply being seen as less corrupt does not necessarily win the trust of young voters," said Wakefield. The survey revealed differences of opinion according to racial groups. About 41 percent of young black South Africans thought the ruling party would do a better job at service delivery, compared to 17 percent who said the DA would do a better job. The opposition party had immense support of 66 percent from young white South Africans on service delivery and maintaining infrastructure. Coloured and Indians shared the same sentiment, with 50 percent and 48 percent respectively. In a survey released on 23 April 2013, a survey by Pondering Panda found 54 percent of black youth expected the DA would revert to apartheid if it won the 2014 election. -Sapa
