“You’re going to wear yourself out—and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself. (Exodus 18:18 NLT) Here we are reminded of the wisdom of being open to advice. These are the words of Jethro, who urged Moses to delegate responsibility. The Bible says, “Wisdom is found in those who take advice” (Prov. 13:10). We should gladly accept it no matter what is the source from which the Lord sends it, even if it comes from your father-in-law in the middle of a desert! Moreover the Lord can give discernment to his servants as they listen to such advice. The plain fact is that no one can carry the load alone. This is just as true of the work of the Lord as it is of secular enterprise. The ambitious and the conscientious act as though they believe it were possible. This is a particular temptation for strong, natural leaders and pioneers, and not a few have had to learn the hard way that they cannot handle the task by themselves. The benefits of sharing the work with others are many. Not least is this very practical one, implied in today’s passage: both leaders and led avoid being worn out unnecessarily, the former by attention to endless detail and the latter by simply waiting around for something to happen.
