Yup. It is not about each child acquiring a discrete set of facts; its about each child having been awakened to his/her potential to acquire knowledge. Within each discipline, of course, there are foundational elements through which a childs potential can be exercised--in English, that means orienting students to structure/form and the means by which authors can manipulate them (and thereby the reader/viewer) to make meaning. That is why this notion of common core is so very bizarre. Find me the English classroom in this country in which the elements of literature and poetics wasnt/isnt being taught. The social studies room devoid of historical inquiry, or a bio room with no discussion of systems or a math room with no discussion of order of operations. Where those classrooms exist, fire the teacher. Let the rest of us continue educating your children!
