Yusuf Islam Kicks off Comeback Tour Yusuf Islam, the British artist previously known as Cat Stevens, has launched a new European comeback tour in London, returning to the stage he abandoned decades ago after reverting to Islam. “I was getting criticism from the Muslim community: why are you picking up a guitar again? What’s happening to you?” he said as he began a string of European gigs ahead of his first US tour in more than 35 years, Agence France Presse (AFP) reported on Sunday, November 9. “I say: listen to me, this is part of Islamic civilization, we have lost our contact with it, we lost our vibrant approach to life and to culture.” The 66-year-old British singer reverted to Islam four decades ago, changed his name to Yusuf Islam and abandoned the stage. Years after leaving the stage, Yusuf came back to the musical world mastering Islamic songs/Nasheeds; he renewed some of his old tracks and produced new ones which all speak about peace, reconciliation, and spirituality. “Peace Train”, “Little Ones Still Smiling”, “Be What You Must”, and “Roadsinger” are just examples of Yusuf’s inspirational songs. His latest songs came last week when he released the new blues album under the title “Tell Em Im Gone”. Islam has never stopped making records over the last three decades, releasing three albums of Islam-related songs, The Life of the Last Prophet (1995), Prayers of the Last Prophet (1999) and a record for children, A Is for Allah (2000), most of them have been for humanitarian causes. His UN-registered charity, Small Kindness, provides humanitarian relief, through direct aid as well as social and educational programs, to orphans and families in Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq and other regions of the world.
