God bless you Yvette for taking the time to help us understand a very serious Mental Health Issue and how to deal with it: **************************************** Signs and Symptoms of Depression Everyone gets depressed sometimes how we react to it is another matter. One thing that many do not know is that depression is a sign of anger turned inward. Not everyone experiences the same types of depression. Let’s start by looking at the first three types: Types of depression 1. Major Depression: A constant sense of hopelessness and despair is a sign you may have major depression. Major depression is also known as clinical depression. Major depression may include it being difficult to work, study, eat, sleep and enjoy friends and activities. Some people have clinical depression only once in their life, while others have it several times in a lifetime. 2. Dysthymia: Dysthymia, sometimes referred to as mild, chronic depression, is less severe than major depression. With dysthymia, the depression symptoms can linger for a long period of time, often two years or longer. Those who suffer from dysthymia can also experience periods of major depression. 3. Atypical Depression: Atypical depression is a type of depression that can have some symptoms that are similar to those of major depression, but it does not have the number of symptoms needed for a diagnosis of major depression. Common symptoms of atypical depression include increased appetite or weight gain, sleepiness or excessive sleep, and feeling extremely sensitive to rejection. Remember depression can only be diagnosed by a licensed professional or medical doctor. Not everyone experiences all the signs and symptoms. Next time we’ll cover the last 4 types and talk about sign and symptoms along with some suggested things you can do to alleviate the symptoms. Be Well, Yvette
