ZEBRA: PLEASE HELP the Girl Who Tries Too Hard – Female Pointer/Lab Mix at Anne Arundel County Animal Control, Millersville, MD – Sherry Durm · FREE TO A RESCUE OR TO AN ADOPTER: Zebra’s pull fees have been paid by one of her many friends at our shelter. · Arrived Sept. 11 as a stray. · Has received bordatella and distemper vaccinations. · Zebra weighs 40 pounds, is already spayed and is about 7 years old. Oh, dear Zebra. If she was a young woman out on the town with her pals, she’d be the one laughing too hard and too loud, flipping her hair nervously and swiveling her eyes from guy to guy. Coming across as, well, more than a little desperate, and turning off potential suitors left and right. And that’s really very unfortunate, because if you got to know this woman, you’d discover that she’s actually quite reserved – refined, even. Back here in Reality, Zebra the dog is just as desperate for attention – and the way she tries to get it is just as unfortunate: As long as she knows a person is nearby, Zebra barks nonstop in her cage. If someone gets closer to her, she hops up against her cage door, panting, eye bulging, still barking – the picture of a frantic dog. Result? She has been with us almost six long weeks now, an almost unheard of amount of time for a healthy, good-looking, mid-sized dog. Potential adopters simply shake their head and pass her by. And what a shame that is, because if they’d see her outside her shelter cage, they’d discover a different dog. No barking at you (although maybe a little woofing at another dog; she’s choosy about them). No jumping, no frantic eye-rolling and panting. Friendly to strangers, and willing to sit on command, as you can see from the attacked videos (which you did watch, didn’t you?). If anything, she’s somewhat reserved – not a gushy, love-all-over-you type of dog, but a calm, refined presence who may take some time to warm up. Why, you might even call her Zen Zebra, she’s so mellow. What an amazing transformation! It’s so sad that no one has taken the time to see the attractive personality under all that attention-seeking behavior. She remains adoptable, but we are hoping that a rescue might take Zebra so she can escape the shelter cage that so alters her personality. Can you give Zebra the chance to show the world what she’s really like? We know your work is hard and endless, and we thank you for doing it. Please share Zebra’s plea.
