ZERO TO SIXTY Jymn Scooby Meier AEOE State Historian 2013 The 2013 Southern Environmental Educator Of The Year was Mr. The following was taken from the Winter Newsletter of 2013 written by Anna Maria Desipris Congratulations to Danny Sudman, AEOE’s 2013 Southern Section Environmental Educator of the Year! Danny is the Program Director at Catalina Island Camps and has been in Outdoor Education for 9 years. Danny has been an exceptional example of quality Environmental Education. His contributions to the Catalina Island Camp curriculum were of high caliber, relevant and successful. Themes of Danny SudmanNomination written by: Anna Maria Desiprissustainability, native plant/landscape restoration and conservation are often difficult to translate to children. Danny has effectively involved students of many ages in programming highlighting these themes through hand-on activities and service projects. Some examples include removal of invasive species, coastal clean up, composting, native plant restoration and many more. Children have been able to clearly see the value and importance of their efforts with his direction. Even further, is Danny’s participation in the CELP program founded at CIC. This program takes students on a marine exploration at Catalina Island, covering ecology, conservation and more. Danny’s passion is easily seen when you speak to him about Environmental Education. So much so that he has started his own non-profit, Green Camps Initiative that will assist camps in finding the appropriate resources to implement sustainable initiatives at their facilities. All of these things protect the environment by encouraging camps to use resources wisely and leave fewer footprints on our Earth. Danny has also started an outdoor environmental day program at Hahamunga Park through Crescenta Valley Outdoor School. Through this day program, students participate in science and environmental programming while exploring nature at the same time. His persistence is paying off as the program is gaining popularity in the community. Congratulations Danny! Thanks for your hard work, dedication, and inspiration.
