ZRP warns kombi crews: The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has expressed concern over a growing trend by commuter omnibus crews who are kidnapping police officers. In a statement, police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri said some commuter omnibus crews when arrested and ordered to drive to a police station or the Vehicle Inspection Depot disregard the directive and drive away with the police officers. He added that at times the officers are attacked by kombi crews. Superintendent Phiri cited a case that happened last week when a member of the force, Constable Kamungere of Masvingo central was kidnapped by a kombi driver Lazarus Maramba. Similar cases were reported in Harare and Marondera. He warned motorists and members of the public that undermining the authority of the power invested in the police force will see them being arrested. Superintendent Phiri said it is an offence under the Traffic Act not to obey instructions given by a police officer, adding that kidnapping is a serious offence under Zimbabwean laws.
