Zack’s Movie Review #2 – “The Butler” After seeing “The World’s End”, we decided to do a back-to-back screening with “The Butler”. Forest Whitaker leads a truly all-star cast in a story about the life of Cecil Gaines, a butler who served eight presidents during his tenure at the White House. Forest Whitaker delivers yet another outstanding performance and will surely have Oscar buzz for next year’s Academy Awards. Oprah Winfrey is a major highlight of the film as well playing as Cecil’s wife, Gloria, and there are just so many unexpected cameos and surprise casting choices throughout the film’s 132 minute run that it’s hard to mention them all. I remember reading updates about the ever growing cast list for the film and it truly did turn out to be a film where nearly everyone in Hollywood is in the film and, fortunately, this is the kind of film that is made so much better by it. While the cast list is impressive, the sometimes overly jumpy timeline of the film leaves a little bit too much for interpretation in my opinion. Some moments are faster than they need to be and others are much too slow. The film overall is quite the cinematic achievement and well deserves all of the award season buzz and kudos it’s receiving. Highly recommend!
