Zahids controversial defence of a Malaysian international illegal gambling kingpin aside, this wasnt the first time that Umno Barus political office bearers at Home Affairs having put shame to the nation because of poor english correspondence, and having by-passed statutory diplomatic protocols set by Wisma Putra. During PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawis administration, I happened to bear witness to similar shameful act by then deputy Home Affairs Minister, Noh Omar. Being a special covert understudy to then Director GeneraI of Biro Tatanegara, Dato Shagul Hamid Abdullah I happened to bear witness to how Noh, having made direct english correspondence to the United States envoy to Malaysia, and by-passing the diplomats at Foreign Affairs. My job then was to accompany Shagul as an enforcer of sort in ticking off the deputy minister over his bureaucratic excesses. The written english on the said letter by Noh was simply atrocious. The mission was under Pak Lahs directive following a formal diplomatic complaint received by Wisma Putra from the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
