Zero-hours contracts mean you must be available to work but the employer gives you no guarantee week-to-week about how many hours you will work. So forget about planning to pay the rent, a mortgage (you wont get one) or even eating. Dont bother trying to make appointments for the dentist or look after your children: you might be called into work with no right to negotiate. Dont get sick, or expect holidays. Who benefits from this labour market flexibility and are introducing these appalling contracts? The global corporations of course. Who pay very little tax, export their profits, and screw the already low-paid workers. There is no excuse for this greed: New Zealand has just been found by the OECD to be the second-best country in the world in which to do business. Hardly the verdict of a bunch of commies. Im boycotting every single company that I find is using zero-hours contracts: I will not spend a dollar with them until this exploitation stops. My next stop is supermarket companies.
