Zimba Zoot Goes Home By Martin Bubear ©2013 Willows ears pricked, there was a noise, her doggy instinct had alerted her. It wasn’t Theo who was still sleeping in his bed. His Buzz Lightyear duvet mostly on the floor. She stood, What was it? Cocking her head she tried to listen. Theo breathing? No. Cameron in the bedroom next door? No. Erin cooing in her cot? No. Nothing unusual. Whizz! There it was again, a tiny quiet whizzing sound, even with her great hearing it was barely there. She sniffed the air, she could smell nothing strange. Just smelly socks and the hint of a biscuit hidden somewhere, which she might have to hunt out later. Nothing unusual. Whizz! She turned her head quickly – yes there it was, way down low on the floor. She took a step forward, it was too dark to see but she slowly headed towards the sound. Whizz! Her head and nose were now as low as they could go and she crawled towards the wall, nose now touching the skirting board. WHIZZ! Louder now and she then she saw it –a little blue spinning light dancing along the skirting board – a tiny thing – smaller than one of her claws. WHIZZ! Then it suddenly spun up in the air and there standing on the end of her nose with its one eye blinking its blue fur shimmering and its feet tip tapping was the strangest thing Willow had ever seen. It was blue and fluffy with one blinking eye and feet which were constantly moving. The eye blinked at Willow, Willow blinked at the eye. WHIZZ! The blue puff started to spin on the end of Willow’s nose. Willow sneezed – The blue puff flew off. Willow sniffed and tried to find the whizzing puff ball again, but in the dark she couldn’t see anything. After a while she curled up back by Theo’s bed and fell asleep. WHIZZ! WHIZZ! Something was tickling her nose, Willow lifted her head and opened her eyes. There on the end of her nose stood the blue puff ball again. It was getting lighter now, almost dawn but the house was still asleep. A name flashed in her head – she didn’t hear it – it was not like when Dad, Mum, Cameron or Theo called her, it was just there in her head. “Zimba Zoot” Then more words came into her head. “I am Zimba Zoot” it said “And I need your help”. “I am lost and I need you to take me outside before the sun comes up”. Willow tried to talk back but all she could mange was a quiet “woof” – she wanted to help but knew she would need help too. She looked at Theo asleep in his bed, she looked at Zimba Zoot and they both looked at Theo. “Wake him up” Zimba said pointing to Theo lying in bed, one arm wrapped around an Iggle Piggle. Willow jumped up with her front paws on the bed – she knew she wasn’t supposed to get on the beds but she had to help Zimba. She licked Theo’s face. Theo lifted his arm and rubbed his wet cheek – but he was still asleep. Willow licked his face again this time harder “Get off Willow” Theo said sleepily. Willow barked and Theo opened his eyes. “Get down Willow” Theo said trying to push her off his bed. He then noticed something standing on the end of her nose – a blue puff ball with one big eye and two little dancing feet. WHIZZ! Went the puff ball spinning on the spot. “What?” said Theo. “Woof” said Willow. Theo rubbed his eyes and looked more closely. The Puffball eye looked back at Theo. “Hello” said the puff ball “I need your help”. “Help?” questioned Theo. “I need to get outside before the sun comes up, my space ship is in the garden – my name is Zimba Zoot by the way” “I’m Theo” said Theo. “I know” said Zimba Zoot. Theo climbed out of bed, Willow stood beside him. Theo knew he wasn’t allowed out of his bedroom at night but this was an emergency. He headed out of is room, across the landing towards the stairs. Willow followed close behind. He could see Cameron still asleep in his bed and his mum and dad asleep in their bed. His dad was snoring. Theo carefully went down stairs and into the kitchen. The floor tiles were cold under his feet. He tried to open the back door – but it was locked. “You need keys” he heard Zimba say. Theo looks on the kitchen side and he could just see some keys on the top. He reached up for them. He had never unlocked the back door before although he had seen his mum and dad do it loads of times. Trouble was there was lots of keys and he couldn’t work out which one to use. WHIZZ! WHIZZ! He turned to look at Willow, Zimba was spinning in the end of her nose, just then he felt a tingling in his hand and the keys started to move on their own. Zimba was controlling the keys. They lifted from his hand and one big brass keys hovered in the air before slotting into the lock. “You need to turn it” Zimba said. Theo turned they key and the lock clicked open, he then pulled the handle and the door was now open too. “Well done” Zimba said “To the trampoline Willow” Willow trotted outside, it was still quite dark but not cold, Theo followed. The trampoline was at the end of the garden and Willow ran across the grass, Theo followed, the recently cut grass was damp under his feet. And there under the trampoline was a bright blue and green space ship about the size of a dustbin lid. Willow climbed under the trampoline and pushed her nose up to the space ship. A small door opened in the side of the ship and Zimba jumped in. “Thank you” Zimba said waving to Willow and Theo “perhaps I’ll see you again one day”. The door on the ship closed and the whole thing started to spin, it lifted off of the ground and shot off into the night sky like a shooting star. “Wow” said Theo. “Woof” said Willow. Willow and Theo looked at each other. Willow then scratched her ear and went for a sniff around the garden as if nothing had happened. Theo decided to head back to the house and Willow followed behind and after carefully locking the back door they went back up to his room to bed. He felt very tired and was soon fast asleep again. The next morning his mum can in to wake him up – he remembered the great dream he’d had about Zimba Zoot. “You look happy” his mum said to him “What’s up?” “I had a really good dream about an alien. Me and Willow helped him get back to his spaceship” Theo said excitedly. “Really?” his mum said “that does sound like a good dream, now get out of bed and go and have some breakfast”. “Yes mum” Theo said swinging his legs from under the covers – Willow licked his feet and when he looked down he saw they were covered in grass and mud – he looked at Willow. “Was it a dream Willow?” he whispered. “Woof” said Willow. The End.
