Zombies, Raffles, Sweet Corn and the Grand Tour Desjardins The Grimsby Farmers’ Market has become an icon for our town. Whether as a meeting place for friends or family, an opportunity to sit, enjoy a light meal while listening to live music, or a chance to walk the dog and children along Main Street at a leisurely pace, speaking with the friendly vendors and sampling some of the freshest produce available, more people are enjoying the market experience. Markets should be a place to reconnect with agriculture and learn about where our food comes from, and there are plenty of experts in this field right on Main Street. Our market also takes pride in helping the community that has made this market so successful. Each year we try to assist the Grimsby Benevolent Fund fill their shelves with fresh, healthy food alternatives by providing market bucks redeemable at any of the market vendors. For the second year, we are running our Zombie and raffle event with proceeds going to help support our local branch of the Big Brothers, Big Sisters association. The event takes place on August 21, more details are featured within this week’s paper. On August 28th, we will once again feature our “Peaches ‘n (ice) Cream event, whereby market visitors can partake on some hot, freshly picked sweet corn followed by a bowl of local peaches topped off with homemade ice cream. This year, shoppers have a choice; enjoy this treat for a toonie or bring an item that can be used in the GBF “Back to School Back Pack” program. All items collected and all proceeds from this event will be donated to the GBF to help equip children and youth as they return to school this fall. This year, the Grand Tour Desjardings embraced the Niagara region as 1500 cyclists from Quebec and Northern Ontario journeyed to Hamilton for the start of their 7 day, 6 night cycling adventure. Covering 100 kms. each day, this well organized group reached Grimsby on Friday August 8 and was welcomed at Coronation Park as they dismounted and enjoyed lunch and a true “Grimsby friendly by nature” reception. Sarah Sweeney, Recreation coordinator for the Department of Recreation, Facilities and Culture was informed of the planned Grimsby stop about 10 days ago. Realizing that this would be an excellent way to show our visitors how friendly Grimsby really is, she organized the inclusion of the Grimsby Active Transportation Committee and the Grimsby Farmers’ Market to participate. Volunteers from the Lion’s Club of Grimsby were on hand to help with the set up and greeting our guests. Ruth Moffatt, was invaluable with greeting guests with her fluent French as she assisted in handing out hundreds of pieces of fresh fruit donated by the Grimsby Farmers’ Market and sourced from the local farm vendors. “The expression on the faces of those that bit into freshly picked Niagara fruit was amazing” claims Moffatt. “The inclusion of fresh, local fruit appears to be quite a hit, I am so glad we were able to do this” stated Sweeney, as the fruit rapidly disappeared. Most of the cyclists were surprised that the fruit was sourced within 5 km of the site; many thanks to Jim and Mary Warner, of Warner Orchards. There is always something new at the market, come out and enjoy the afternoon.
