Zoning changes need approval before MGM starts construction SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – MGM Springfield has paid the state its gaming license fee. Now, the developer will need to work on getting land use permissions to get its project started in Springfield’s South End. Springfield City Council President Mike Fenton told 22News the City Council will need to approve certain zoning changes before MGM can start the construction. At a meeting Monday night, Fenton hopes to get a “to-do” list started to see what kind of zone changes are necessary and how many public hearings will be needed. Fenton said they’ll also determine how the money coming in from MGM will be used. “Personally, I feel that we should invest in Public Safety, adding thirty police officers will bring them up to safe levels as well as capital improvement,” he said. MGM announced today it has finalized a partnership agreement with Berkshire Brewing Company in South Deerfield. Springfield City Councilors are meeting with MGM officials Monday night to discuss the next steps in the casino process.
