Zoom By Adam Duvall Of the Journal Star Posted Jul. 22, 2014 @ 10:23 pm Tremont has known just one voice at its home football games for the past 51 seasons. Dick Muselman has served as public-address announcer since 1962. He’s also been the scorebook keeper for Tremont boys basketball — home and away games — for the same amount of time. “Voice of the Turks,” 18-year football coach Lou Wicks said. “He’s just a genuine guy and ready to go. He’s always involved and wants to see all kids do well.” Muselman is in the late stages of a battle with cancer. The lifelong Tremont resident is no longer able to speak, but those close to him and the Tremont community are keeping him in their thoughts and prayers. Muselman, a Keystone Steel & Wire Co., retiree, was an assistant softball coach to Bonnie Yocum in Tremont’s opening season in 1976. He’s been a regular fan for both the small- and large-school softball state finals weekends at the EastSide Centre. Muselman is described as the last of the volunteer-fan types who love high school athletics. “For whatever reason, I don’t know if my generation has quite completely grasped the idea that we need guys like him,” said Turks head boys basketball coach Troy Schmidt, who has been around Tremont for 14 years and knows Muselman very well. Schmidt says Muselman is a great guy and was right along with the Turks’ run to the sectional semifinal earlier this year. “He’s never asked for any kind of recognition,” Schmidt said. “He just loves being part of it and truly cares about the kids.” Read more: pjstar/article/20140722/Sports/140729682#ixzz38J1Pw1yw
