Zooventure day…. And what a day. It started at kindy, looking after the animals, with my favourite assistant, Lucian. He helped me carry the food over for the cows, goat and sheep, then he played poo spotter as we walked around the paddock cleaning. He also had the VERY important job of finding all the lost balls that the kids had thrown over (by accident of course) and threw them back over. Then it was on to the birds. First up were the ducks and chickens. He helped me take their water and feed out, and then after we had swept the pen out, he helped refill the feed and water and put it back in. Then we filled up the duck pond out back in the duck and chicken run. Next, as the hose was unravelled, we watered the grass and gardens (and stayed dry ourselves this time). Then he helped put the hose away as we moved on to the look after the parrots. We got the feed and water done and just as we finished up there, his friends all came out to play. As the rule is that he can help till his friends come out to play. Otherwise they get jealous and it’s not fair. So off e went. I finished up tidying up the barn yard (putting things away, refilling feed barrels) and headed up the look after the guinea pigs. Lucian wanted to help, and I told him to ask his teacher. She said yes, so together we changed their water and gave them all fresh feed. Then it was time to go. Big kisses and cuddles for Lucian and off I went to the zoo. I got there in time to help clean out the camel enclosure, then it was on to the llama. This was a quick clean so it was then over to the black buck, once they were locked away of course. The last enclosure to be one on this round was the tahr. Unfortunately they did not want to lock away, so we could not go in. Unless they are locked off, it’s a keeper only job. So off we (vollie Krystal and I) went to clean Millie the echidna’s enclosure. Then it was time for morning tea. After morning tea I got to help with the reptile show. I really do love doing this. I got to hold Tamni, a Bandli python (similar to a carpet python, but found in desert areas. I’ve never worked with him before and he was lovely. He loves being high p so he was constantly sliding up past my face and on to my hat. Had to bring him down, only to do it again…..and again….and again. Lots of snake kisses though. Oh and we got a clap when we finished our talk. Then, after the meet the animals and photo time, I went back up to help Krystal finish cleaning the wallaby and then start on the kangaroos. Just finished up and it was time for lunch. After lunch, it was off to feed the roos and wallabies their afternoon treats. Then to feed Mille, before heading up to farm to feed them their treats and do a quick clean. We got called back to the shed then for a special treat…..Hand feeding training with Alf the tapir!!!! Krystal and I got to go in (one at a time) and hand feed and pat him. This is part of his training to eventually do VIP experiences with him. He really is amazing. It was Krystal’s first time with him, so watching her with him was awesome as well. Then it was a quick race up the arm to finish up the afternoon clean up and feed. Then back to the shed for some washing up and home time. A full and wonderful day. Hugs
