Zungu determined to end trophy drought Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu says the Telkom Knockout is the perfect platform to end the misery of a five-and-a-half year trophy drought at the club. Though Sundowns are only through to the quarter-finals of the league cup the desire and desperation to bring some silverware home for The Brazilians is written all over the yellow walls at Chloorkop. The last time Sundowns won a trophy Zungu was still a schoolboy, and only Esrom Nyandoro and Surprise Moriri know what it means to win anything with Sundowns. “The fact that we haven’t won anything for five years is actually a motivation for us. We want to be that generation that wins something for the club and the president,” Zungu tells KickOff. The lanky 21-year-old is naturally excited that the Brazilians are already in the last eight, with Platinum Stars providing a potential banana skin on the way to the semi-finals. The two teams will do battle at Moruleng Stadium on Saturday evening, kick-off at 7pm. “It means a lot for me that we are on that path towards attaining our ambition of winning silverware,” Zungu says. “The good thing is that there is no pressure and we take each game as it comes. “We have played Platinum Stars before and we realise now that as much as they play good football they have a lot of loopholes. We need to capitalise on those loopholes, take our chances, score goals and win the game. “We have to be more clever in using the gaps that they leave at the back. The talk that has been going on at training is that we have to win games.” Article by: Lovemore Moyo
