___________________________________________ Out of Order, Out of Sequence, Divide and Conquer... ___________________________________________ Just doing a little bit of musing about the City of Shoreline Light Rail Station Area rezonings. Like many of you, I feel bogged down by the details, I feel ambushed by the carefully crafted doublespeak, I feel like time is running out to wrap my head around this, before its too late, and before decisions are finalized by the City Council. The “public outreach process” thus far has been abysmal, deceptive, and misleading (for example, the billboard at 185th and the E. side of I-5) If youre feeling overwhelmed by this burden of having to digest all of these terms, codes, timelines, acronyms, meeting agendas/minutes, figuring out what a Comprehensive Plan is, figuring out what the Growth Management Act is, worrying about the storm of unknowns that is haphazardly whirling about with the breadcrumbs of intent that illuminate themselves once you look beneath the layers and piece things together............ youre feeling is justified. But you know what? Thats not your job. City Staff, Commissions, & City Council should be working in our best interests. Information and intents should be shared transparently, outright, and in plain talk. One of my lingering, nagging questions is.... if the Light Rail line is coming Northward, and were pretty solid on stations at 145th and 185th, Why are the zoning and land-use regulations for the 185th Area taking place in the opposite direction, timewise: North to South? [Besides the fact that rezoning for both stations is happening more than a decade before their arrival.] If we think about telescoping out to the big-picture, what significant factors demand that 185th be rezoned and “staged for change” so soon and months before the 145th Station Area? Were there a few more highly motivated allies identified by outside stakeholders near the 185th Area early in the process? Was everyone counting on these allies to set the stage and precedent for the 145th Area folks. Were there more “tasty” and easily preyed upon demographics in the 185th Area identified early in the process? Im sure were all familiar with the phrase divide and conquer”, but I think this concept plays a huge factor into why these two station areas are being planned and “visioned” in separate processes and on confusing timelines... confusing (or should I say highly suspicious) on many levels. Perhaps this should be a very basic demand for those in opposition to these outrageous rezoning plans… Slow the frick down, rewind, acknowledge that your so-called “extensive public outreach process” has been misleading, delay the 185th Area zoning changes and land-use regulations and make the changes for both Station Areas AT THE SAME TIME.
