a couple of upcoming events/great wall of text - TopicsExpress

a couple of upcoming events/great wall of text incoming: Firstly, we have Reel Rock 9, an annual film event of the climbing variety. This year is showcasing Valley Uprising, looking at the history of Yosemite Valley (the mecca of big wall climbing - think 900m of vertical rock face or 30 rope lengths) and the ragtag bunch of climber hooligans that pushed the boundaries of the sport and generally did crazy shit. That and breathtaking, hand-sweating climbing footage, old and new (heard of Alex Honnold, the insane dude featured in NatGeog that free-solos (ie: climbs without a rope) these big walls in less than a day?), on beautiful rock. Trailer can be found here: https://youtube/watch?v=o86TpaSBcWw and if youre interested, tickets for 12.31 pounds can be booked here: reelrock.co.uk/page4.htm Note: at time of posting the tuesday 21st oct showing that Im going for is fully booked, though theres still the monday 20th oct (which I think owen is going for) and thurs 30th oct available. Secondly, theres the bouldering competition I spoke to some of you about today, the London University Bouldering Event (LUBE), that I hope some of you will participate in. Essentially its 4 rounds of climbing competitions spaced throughout the next year for all London Universities, each at a different climbing gym with a set of 25 problems similar to the Competition wall (the black one next to the cafe) at the castle, ranging from stair-climber grade to pretty bloody hard. Scores are self-marked on sheets that you hand in at the end. Last year it was only me, which didnt really allow me to score points for RVC since every other uni had a team of 8 >< So hopefully thatll change this year :D We need a team of 8, with at least 2 of those being girls. You dont need to think of it as a competition, or to have been climbing ages to participate, anyone with an open mind, willingness to be challenged and a desire to try things out just for fun, is welcome to join (INCLUDING FRESHERS, NO I DONT CARE THAT YOUVE ONLY CLIMBED ONCE OR TWICE). If youre unsure about the commitment of 4 weekend half-days, do note that you dont need to attend all 4 rounds, or even half of them, though obviously it is preferred. Registration fee is 25pounds for each climber FOR ALL 4 ROUNDS (thats 7.50 for each round, just like the standard student charge at the castle), though Im in negotiations with club treasurer Zoe about having it partially subsidized by the club (thank you zoe!) A link to the events facebook page can be found here, with dates and locations for this years rounds, and photos of last years event: https://facebook/LUBE.KCLMC?fref=ts Any interested parties may contact me directly, preferably by Wednesday 22nd Oct, as we need to get the names and money in to the organising committee at KCL. Lastly, we have Blokfest, another series of climbing competitions (though this is more of a climbing festival atmosphere). It is similar to LUBE in that there are multiple rounds (5, but only 3 are in london) spread through the UK; there are a set of 25 problems, again ranging in difficulty from like a ladder to screwthatshit hard; and that scores are self-marked. The differences are that you get a shirt for your troubles and that its more casual since anybody and everybody can enter on an individual basis. entry is more expensive though, at 20 pounds per round. One of the rounds is at the castle though, so thats the one to pick if you can only go for one. More details can be found at: blokfest/p/info.html Do note that all 3 events have spot/lucky draw prizes and general freebies thrown out to the crowd (I snagged myself a DMM chalkbag at a blokfest round last year), all the more reason to go! And so thats me done, hope to see you at some of these!
