a few general comments on the YouTube brouhaha from yesterday, thank you for the spirited debate! 1) if an artist uploads music or a video and wants it shared, that’s fine, that’s their choice. 2) when an artists right of to that choice has been taken away by internet businesses, as it has, your personal data is also open to being used without your consent by similar businesses (facebook, search engines, amazon, data brokers, etc). 3) without consent, there can be no liberty (that’s deep). 4) its not about regulating the internet; its about regulating creepy internet businesses. 5) the internet is not like the weather, it was created by humans and can be changed by humans. 6) one way for youtube to work is for them to share 70% of ad revenue with musicians, filmmakers, writers, your cat, your dog, etc. thats the split apple pays. 7) sharing a cassette with family and friends is not the same as distributing, without consent, other people’s work for googles & youtube’s profit.
