a spring poem, with you in mind Roe Redfearn Boothby, first one published when I moved to mtns (Southern Humanities Review, Winter 208): Early March The ground not even thawed, yet already new shoots of iris and tulips push their way through the hardened dirt. On days of intermittent warmth, we drift outside where jonquils—no more than brushes tipped in yellow— cede sparse confirmation of spring’s approach. Inside, I make do with hyacinths whose forced redolence does not allay this hanging on of cold. We wear wool socks and light the fire each night— while the willow trees along Plott Creek leaf out to dance upon the winds of March, cajoling us to join their hymn of spring. Yet the cold persists— the unrepentant pulse of nature’s will.
