after my day at the gallery, i needed to practice my stories and lines for the play. it helps if someone else reads the other lines to help you with the flow of the words. when i arrived home, leo was busy at his record collection. i forgot we are in the midst of his version of holy week. both birds and prezs birthdays are now. two days apart. it is start of three days of continual homage. i gently walk past, tipping my hat, and trying to find the back porch. the refugees hiding back there are immersed in their own activities. vito is on his fourth or fifth beverage with wet cold towels wrapped around his head. he is reading a book of from my shelf. an old bio of runyon by tom clark. vito looks up and acknowledges my appearance. very funny book. he tells the story with a little fictional insight. ella is in the middle working with vigor on a treat. she looks up with only her eyes and keeps her head focused at the work at hand. after i change and have a light dinner, vito has passed out in his chair surrounded by his empty friends. ella perks up and seems interest in joining me in going to the park.i stop and ask leo if he would like to join us at the senior citizens park for the evening. he puts his stack of vinyl down and expresses the need to take a break. i explain my task i need help with to him. he hesitates but nods yes. as we walk he asks who is he playing and whats his motivation? those watergate reader theater experiences with vito have filled his head with too much junk. i decide to make it easy and suggest he play john dean again. you were very believable as him last time. this will cut down on his questions and hopefully we can just concentrate on the play and learning the lines. ella has her purpose in mind already. this park is isolated enough and rather small. she can control the place, dictating what animals can enter , etc. we settle down on the benches with the script. after the first few pages of dialogue, leo stops and asks if he is dean before the hidden tapes are discovered or after. youre just dean period. you can be haldeman if you want if he can read the lines any better. ill stay with dean. i like him better. it is helping with my work on the play but it is hard to listen to his earnestness in saying the other lines. we finish act one and i decide it is enough for tonight. as we pack up to leave, leo turns to me to ask,who do you have to play nixon?
