and via Mike Kaurich Not the worst guide to commuting by bike that Ive ever seen. Theres some decent debatable suggestions in there, although I think the author makes commuting by bike much more complicated than it needs to be. I totally agree about getting lights, if youre ever going to be outside at dark. And I agree with stopping at every light, respecting pedestrian right of way at all times (and other road users too), and what he describes a shoaling is definitely a dick move. Buying a helmet, especially if youre new to riding in traffic, is certainly not a bad idea; but I encourage everyone to do a little research about their effectiveness before they think theyre guaranteed to save their life, or take unnecessary risks because they think a helmet mitigates said risks (they certainly dont enough to justify any risky behavior). I think encouraging people to wear chamois underwear is absurd unless theyre commuting a lot of miles. Good lock? Yes. Fenders? If youre going to be commuting regularly, Im a huge fender fan, but dont let not having them stop you if youre just giving commuting a try on a beautiful day. All the mechanical stuff? Meh, no need to be a mechanical expert to get on a bike. Like Chris said, you can always throw your bike on a bus and deal with a flat later. Otherwise, wear whatever you want and just ride slower to keep your sweating down.
