Oleg Tsaryov, self-styled “Speaker for the Parliament of Novorussia”, an unrecognised separatist entity in East Ukraine, told Russian News Service that the overlay of the event, at which the singer was handed the flag of Russia-sponsored entity, had been agreed upon two weeks prior to the event. “We agreed on the exchange of flags: she was supposed to hand over a Banner of Peace (aka Roerich’s flag) to me, and I was to hand her a flag of Novorussia and receive the money [donation Netrebko said was designated for Donetsk Opera House]. The whole thing had been agreed on,” said Mr. Tsaryov. He also said that his press service wasn’t present at the event in St. Petersburg. Photos of Netrebko receiving the “flag of Novorussia” were taken by the singer’s press service, assured Tsaryov. “She didn’t have to give in, to make excuses. She has our full support. People aren’t indifferent to the bullying campaign that has since been launched against her,” - concluded Mr. Tsaryov. Photos of Netrebko and Tsaryov provoked a wave of discontent on social networks, while the singer was accused of aiding and abetting terrorism and urged to abandon her Austrian citizenship. In response Netrebko wrote on his page on Facebook page: “Tsaryov was introduced to me as the only person, who could ensure the safe delivery of funds to the opera house in Donetsk.
