anon: Hi everyone, I have a 5 year old who is struggling with number recognition, he started school at the beginning of the year and had no number or letter knowledge, this is simply because the preschool he went to convinced me he didnt need to learn to read or write before school. Little did i know he actually did because now he is having to catch up with the rest of the class. We live in New Zealand. I am very worried that he wont catch up enough to go into the next year, he has 2 more terms left this year.I have been communicating closely with his teacher and the school in regards to whats happening. I have asked for extra help for him but in NZ children only get extra help when they are 6 and if they meet the criteria of needing assistance. My son doesnt have a learning difficulty he simply went to school with less number and word knowledge than most of his class. He is at level 6 reading and should be at level 12 at the end of the year. What strategies have you used to help your child recognize numbers and progress with reading?I have a 1.5 yr old full on active child as well and I have very little time where I can be alone to do work with my 5 year old. My partner comes home late from work so its hard to get homework, housework and dinner all done in the 3 hours before my partner comes home. I have been working 3 days a week and Im considering leaving my job to have more time at home to clean and do daily chores while my son is at school so that I can have time in the evening for him. Has anyone else been in this situation?Im feeling emotionally and physically drained!
