as for the immigration fiat--so bogus all this cynical posturing. every president since EISENHOWER has used presidential orders to improve the always disorganized and downright cruel immigraton policies of this country. obama is doing some very thoughtful surgery on the problem, but in some ways the patient is flatlining.(get this thing on dialysis treatment, stat!) meanwhile i got a call about an hour ago from a friend of mine in nyc, lived in my old neighborhood, inwood,(the northern tip of manhattan, next to the cloisters.) which was largely dominican. my friend is dominican, and i had noticed him several times, his cheerfulness and desperation, and a real intelligence in his eyes, we started exchanging greetings when we passed on the sidewalk. hes about 19 or 20. stymied as to how to go to school to learn something he could make a wage doing. unable to earn money, or even apply for assistance, he had no place to live, or even sleep, his mother had no place for him and his girl friends mom was getting really tired of him. he would cadge a little cash to stay high. he was truly up against the back wall of a narrowing alley. i helped him when i could and i even let him stay in my place when i was out of town for a couple days. when i had to move out of nyc rather suddenly, (yes, i was on the lam), this guy spent three days carefully packing all my possessions along with me. then he arranged for his brother to take me to the airport at half price...he just called me from rehab, his voice upbeat as always, but clear and strong and jubilant. i been here for six months man, (so proud of himself, and i seconded that emotion right away.) and im going to get my papers, and get my diploma, and...join the world, man. i was grocery shopping and he had to get back to group, but we shared an honest celebration of a small triumph and a gigantic step up for this country. on behalf of my friend, and me, thanks, PRESIDENT OBAMA.
