#askCommunicationCommitteeRBMC Question from MEMBER #85 “… How many visitors are visiting the RBMC official site versus this site? …” Answer TO MEMBER #85 “… How many visitors are visiting the RBMC official site versus this site? …” was a question just asked and I would like to address it. The usage of the official dotORG page is a guarded secret. However, members of RBMC can take a good guess from the request I recently received from the VP. Marty wrote, “…John, My issue is not for you to not have a site for people to post their opinions, good or bad. I would like to ask you to not use the words RIVER BEND in your search engine. When an outsider does a search of RIVER BEND to inquire about our community, the negativity effects prospective buyers interest in RB. This is not fair to members trying to sell. At least if it would be Johns River News or something of the sorts it wouldnt be directed right at us. Thanks for you consideration. With due respect Marty…”. Here is my reply that sheds light on the question “… How many visitors are visiting the RBMC official site versus this site? …”. Doing a Google for “River Bend News”. Marty, I do not have any control over “How Do Search Engines Determine Importance?”. Currently, the major engines typically interpret importance as popularity – the more popular a site, page or document, the more valuable the information contained therein must be. This assumption has proven fairly successful in practice, as the engines have continued to increase users’ satisfaction by using metrics that interpret popularity. Popularity and relevance aren’t determined manually. Instead, the engines craft careful, mathematical equations – algorithms – to sort the wheat from the chaff and to then rank the wheat in order of tastiness (or however it is that farmers determine wheat’s value). In other words the major search engines have determined • riverbendnews • followrbmc • riverbendmobile.net • followriverbend • riverbendnet.net and • riverbendnetwork are more popular sites, pages, documents than riverbendrvpark.org and the information at • riverbendnews • followrbmc • riverbendmobile.net • followriverbend • riverbendnet.net and • riverbendnetwork is more valuable than information contained therein at riverbendrvpark.org May I suggest the corporation give some thought to allowing Director Buddy Pendleton an open hand in riverbendrvpark.org. If beyond his capability, Michael Binko is an expert in methods that can increase the prominence of riverbendrvpark.org within the search results such as: • Cross linking between pages of the same website to provide more links to most important pages may improve its visibility. • Writing content that includes frequently searched keyword phrase, so as to be relevant to a wide variety of search queries will tend to increase traffic. • Updating content so as to keep search engines crawling back frequently can give additional weight to a site. • Adding relevant keywords to a web pages meta data, including the title tag and meta description, will tend to improve the relevancy of a sites search listings, thus increasing traffic. • URL normalization of web pages accessible via multiple urls, using the canonical link element or via 301 redirects can help make sure links to different versions of the url all count towards the pages link popularity score. I believe in exercising my First Amendment rights. The above is in response to “…John, My issue is not for you to not have a site for people to post their opinions, good or bad.
