at 1:30am, this is giving me the chills (besides the cold weather outdoors). i remembered this 2008 performance at the Cultural Center of the Philippines: the audience became wild for some reason (not to suggest though that the imagined community invoked here intends to be one of a primitive, savage sort...nor it is to imply that the performance got unreasonably out of hand). it is amazing how this conception of a distinct performance-ritual (as we were discussing in the previous forum) emerges out quite naturally, given the right stimuli and the appropriate cultural imaginary. the invocation of such an imaginary in a Western concert hall also strongly challenges the hegemony of Western culture and the adaptation of modernity pervading in this society as well. too bad that we were only given a 10-minute slot for this performance, so maybe that hurried pace was unconsciously captured by those participating in it as well. and i just remembered this because my teacher (who composed this) once described to us that imagination of coming in and going out of the space, only to see that same boring thing going on for a long time. the original conception of the work anyway comes without the conch shell, and that the opening scraper section just begins (in an ambiguous sort of way) and continuously repeats (not without form, though), and is intended to stretch out for a long time (hence, the timelessness).
