#behavioranalysis / #Christmas in #Hawaii: Ocean waves, palm trees, lights, and presents, of course! This project involved the use of fine motor skills (cutting, tearing, hole punching, writing, gluing), as well as shape and color recognition/discrimination, and imitation (bows on presents). In addition, we also worked on increasing sustained attention to task and following 2 step directions. This was all made possible by embedding preferred activities [hand writing, gluing] into a non-preferred [teacher-led] activity (CMO-R, Carbone et al., 2007) files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ805603.pdf. The phrase, Mele Kalikimaka (which is Hawaiis Way to Say Merry Christmas to You) is a socially significant target to teach a child living in Hawaii (especially during the holiday season), as is the idea of a palm tree decked out for the holidays! https://youtube/watch?v=hEvGKUXW0iI. Moments/activities like these reiterate for me, the incredible importance of considering cultural influences. Culture (military, ethnicity, race, socio-economic status) impacts the way we teach and consult and thus the way our clients learn and play! Stay open to learning something new everyday!
