best reasons to garden are tomatoes that develop full potential of flavor chemicals by staying on the plant until completely ripe (chemicals made from sugar that continues to be transported from leaves until fruit is picked) and corn that is picked less than an hour before cooking (in most varieties half the sugar is converted to starch within 12 hours). But since Boone has had only 2 rain-free days in more than 3 weeks the fungus diseases late blight (Phytophera infestans) and northern corn leaf blight (Helminthosporium turcicum) are thriving here. Most tomato plants are now dead, corn is hurting, and this gardener is sad.
