bit.ly/1tGCaZP Letter - Choice is clear! Joe Pakootas for Congress I appreciated the Walla Walla Valley Chamber of Commerce for providing an excellent and civil framework for the debate between 5th Congressional District Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Republican, and challenger Joe Pakootas, Democrat. Questions submitted by Walla Wallans before the debate were asked to both candidates. Pakootas wants to end the gridlock that resulted in the shutdown of many government agencies, including food stamps, veterans’ benefits, not paying active duty members of the military, laying off many federal employees who had no paychecks to pay for basic necessities nor any date at which they could count on returning to work. He favors negotiation and compromise to resolve differences. McMorris Rodgers voted repeatedly to continue the government shutdown. Pakootas would work for all of us, not just for wealthy campaign donors, private and corporate. He favors an amendment to the Constitution overturning Citizens’ United, which allows individuals and corporations to make unlimited contributions to candidates. He supports the Affordable Care Act that has 10 million Americans previously uninsured to have insurance. He supports fully funding veterans’ health care and resources for the poor, children and disabled. He favors investing in education, including reducing interest on crippling student loans. Pakootas sees job creation as a priority. Investing in repairing or replacing disintegrating infrastructure would also create thousands of jobs. He would fund these much needed projects by eliminating tax loopholes and subsidies to corporations that do not pay their share of taxes. He is a champion of the environment. A Canadian company was sued resulting in a landmark decision to stop them from dumping heavy metal contaminants into Lake Roosevelt. Pakootas is a strong advocate for women, supporting equal pay for equal work, protecting all women from domestic violence, fully meeting women’s health care and reproductive needs. He believes in strengthening Social Security and Medicare, not weakening and endangering them by privatization. McMorris Rodgers voted 54 times against the Affordable Care Act and hardly ever votes to increase funding for Veterans’ Health Care, despite the increased need created by wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. She voted against Wall Street reform, funding student aid and reducing student debt, extension of unemployment benefits, funding of birth control for low income women, food programs and health insurance for children. She missed 92 percent of her committee meetings in the last session! The choice is clear. Vote Pakootas! Beth Call Walla Walla
