(book-- this was my first time in China which was night and day different from the 2nd, The prosperity the second time was shocking in comparison. But this was 1996---3 days after the Hong Kong handover) We arrived in the airport in China, each with huge Study Manuals for the non-registered church leaders in our carry on bags. Some of the group got taken aside and searched. I did not. We arrived at our hotel in the Guangxi province and what I saw was shocking. The red carpeting in the halls was full of muddy water. I entered my room and there were wads of black hair on the floor and logs of human feces in the toilets. The screens had been torn out of the window. In order to ‘flush’ the toilet (wish the prior guests had) we had to go fill a bucket and pour it fast into the toilet. We had brought bug spray so we sprayed the invisible screens and praise God came home without malaria. Outside streets were broken pavement, and we saw no cars. Roads were crowded with bicycles. People sold fruits and vegetables by the side of the road in improvised carts made of slats of wood attached to bicycles. We were warned against eating fruit unless it had a very thick skin because of the poor water conditions. We closed our eyes on our dirty beds, tried not to think about the bugs coming into the screen-less windows. The next day we would begin three days of mountain climbing in order to deliver our study manuals.
