My local, UC-AFT, which represents the 3,000 lecturers and librarians of the University of California has just approved a campaign focused on democracy. Democracy in our workplace, democracy in the governance of the UC system, democracy in California. We mean real (strong, slow, direct, monitory) democracy, not the facade of democracy we now have. We hope to ally with students, tenure-track (Senate) faculty, other staff, alumni, and the people of California to take the idea of democracy beyond mere voting (and giving wads of cash) to active participation in the governance of our daily life, starting with the work that makes the University of California real.
