by Robert Santee Their arrival at McDonalds restaurant was somewhat difficult as the man had a bit of difficulty helping his wife through the entrance doors. The motorized chair struggled to gain entrance, but finally made it safely. Her arms were shaking as she tried to maneuver the steering lever, and with considerable difficulty, finally arrived at a table and parked. He watched over her every move. She sat patiently in her chair as her husband went and ordered their meals. She had a smile on her face. Her husband soon returned and putting the tray on the table, seated himself in the booth next to her cart. It became obvious, as people watched, that she could not control her arms or hands to eat, and this jewel of a man began feeding her. She was hungry and also seemed excited that she was being taken out to dinner. The man carefully held the sandwich up to her mouth and she took a bite and began chewing it. She paused in her chewing long enough for him to daintily wipe her mouth, then continued chewing her morsel of food. The look on the mans face told all, who cared to look, that he loved this woman, and she, although totally dependent on him for her life, also loved him deeply. Bite after bite the meal continued, and as each bite was received, he would wipe her mouth carefully. It seemed a practiced art for them; a way of life that thankfully most of us will never have to know. They were both nicely dressed; he had seen to that too, and his ability showed. There was almost a radiance around them Her motor chair was blocking the isle to the bathroom, but no one complained, and instead managed to carefully pick their way around another table to get the their destinations. Everyone could see the beautiful picture the couple made, and no one bothered them in any way. Their love and caring for each other seemed magnified throughout the restaurant, and everyone was quietly looking, yet the couple seemed not to notice. They were intent on each other in their own private little world. I had been sitting there feeling a little sorry for myself because of what happened to me in the past few days. Yes, life was getting a little tougher, until I viewed these two making the most they could out of what had to be a difficult life, and seemingly enjoying every minute of it. I think I learned a lesson today. Sadly, I had to leave before they finished, but seeing them absolutely made my day.
