by2F"By PATRICK ALCATRAZ Editor BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Mexican women here rarely get their due. A good many are punched-out on weekend nights by lovers and husbands arriving drunk on their asses, all of them stumbling-in to launch Lou Groza-worthy kicks to the stomach, the ass and the head, all of them fully believing they are invincible. The local Macho culture allows it. That is the badge of the Texas side of the Mexican border, land occupied primarily by rough-edged Mexicans. That portrait of pain is available at the city police department, where, invariably, the arrest ledger shows family violence as the favored sport of these portly, rural chicanos. One such vato actually is a city commissioner. His name is Ricardo Longoria, representing District 1 and the city sector known as Southmost, not exactly high-dollar real estate, but its people expect to live anyway. Longoria is in his 3rd term at City Hall. And he is a schoolteacher employed by the Brownsville Independent School District. His time at City Hall has not been one of great accomplishment; his days in the classroom perhaps a bit better. Longoria arrives here for one reason. This quote: "Love you, pendeja."
