checking Our Waistband Advent Weekday Justice shall be the band around his waist... Isaiah 11:5 Isaiah prophesies about the coming of a Messianic King who will bring justice. He uses a fascinating metaphor to speak about this: a waist band tied around ones clothing. Today, without a waistband around pants, they easily fall down. Justice had fallen down for the poor in Isaiahs world. Disenfranchised and mistreated persons cried out for someone to notice and assist them. When Jesus came as the one Isaiah prophesied, he certainly wore justice as a waistband. He reached out to those whose basic rights were disregarded or denied and taught his followers to have justice as a focal point of their lives. The question I ask myself in Advent is this: Are my pants falling down? How strong is my waistband of justice? Will it hold up my values as a follower of Jesus, the Just One? Is it strong enough for me to speak out and act on behalf of those who have no one to speak for them? - Sr. Joyce Rupp, O.S.M.
