common core rant of the day. i have decided that instead of using the term common core math for this nonsense that is being taught in the schools, it should be renamed math theory. as, that is what it seems to be, imho, anyway. if one knows math theory, then one should and can, be a math scholar, or a mathematician. A mathematician is a person with an extensive knowledge of mathematics who uses this knowledge in their work, typically to solve mathematical problems. Mathematics is concerned with numbers, data, collection, quantity, structure, space, models and change. In mathematical logic, a theory (also called a formal theory) is a set of sentences in a formal language. Usually a deductive system is understood from context. An element of a theory is then called an axiom of the theory, and any sentence that follows from the axioms ( ) is called a theorem of the theory. so, using a set of sentences in a formal language, by a mathematician, a second grader can now proceed to add one plus one. or 58 subtract 13. starting from 13, we add two. coz we know that 15 is an easily manipulated number. (we know this, coz we are inherently intelligent as second graders) from there we add 5. (now we are at 7) from 20, we add 10 ... three times (37 we have now) to get to 50. add 5 more. (but but.. we cant add 37 and 5 coz that will take another long round of adding up wont it? oh my. lets cheat and go with 42) 55 plus 3 equals 58. (42 plus 3 equals45) viola! oh, i mean voila! so, using a deductive system, we have understood that subtracting 13 from 58 will yield 45. or.. i picked 58 apples. until jane and dick came by and stole 13. i only have 45 apples left. with all that said, understood (?), let us move on to broadly apply this principle to all the general public in the united states. esp the person whose idea this was. i cannot get out of bed until i understand the process and logic of how my bed was constructed. i cannot wear any clothing until i understand and can demonstrate how my shirt was constructed and sewn. i cant use my sewing machine, until i understand the mechanics of the machine. how does the electricity make the machine run? and make the needle go up and down? i cant turn on the electricity, until i make a kite with a key attached, so i will learn how electricity was captured. in the meantime, i guess my husband will be responsible for the construction of the house. what are the dynamics of the hammer and nail? we must understand physics and the law of levers and pulleys before we open a door. we cant drive our car to a job until we understand how gasoline operates and powers the motors. oh my, i cant have any more coffee either! i will be required to plant and grow my own coffee trees! send over some cocoa trees too, while you are at it. purpose? why are we to understand every single little thing in each and every part of our life? what did the caveman learn? each man to his trade. common core takes away our individuality! yes!! instead of counting my leftover apples, i need to find jane and dick, and get them back! teach jane and dick the principle of pick your own apples! rant over. i feel much better. at least for today
