couple of thoughts for the day. Been seeing a lot of posts about keeping chickens water liquid over the winter. My experience is that a fish aquarium style heater, although effective with the proper wattage, costs a substantial amount due to the amount of power required. What I found that works well is a submersible aquarium power head. It uses ALLOT less power (15-30 Watts vs. 150 Watts) and as long as the water is circulating it will not freeze. Now I know this may not be a viable solution to all due to your watering setup, but it is a cheaper method than trying to use heat to keep the water thawed. Now a thought on these popular barrel feeders. Thought I would make one and give it a try. Came out this morning to find my little buckling with his head stuck in the hole. apparently holes just big enough for the bigger goats to get their snouts in (approx. 4 inches in diameter), are large enough for a little buckling to stick his entire head into, then of course his little horns get him stuck. I Will definitely be going back to my traditional 2x4 inch Welded wire fence hay manger before I come out to a hung little guy. I am sure that mods could be made to remedy this scenario, like using smaller holes along the bottom for the littler guys, but that would require spending more on another barrel, and well, my original manger worked well enough that i just dont see the need to spend that extra 12 dollars. Part of self sustainability is not wasting resources, including money right. Now a couple of questions. I just recently bought some more 55 gal barrels that where used to store a liquid smoke, the consistency of which is like a molasses. What would be a good way to get the stick residue off the sides to clean the barrels? I am starting to put one of those barrel stoves into my pole barn and was wondering if anybody had any ingenious ideals on how to recoup more of the heat from the entire system. I was thinking of finding a way to mount a small fan to the stack to create a nice convective current across it. but cant think of a way to keep it from melting, any thoughts?
