crossed over the border today and hit the line of cartel money change houses in Laredo. You can get just about the best rates in the country there. They wheel and deal. got some pesos and got on the road .Goodbye Laredo! Had to get myself back into Mexican driving mentality. Did not take long, maybe a half hour or so . the rule is if you can do it and get away with it its ok.In other words there are no driving rules! Passed the outskirts of Monterrey and the evidence of Mexican industrial might in full effect. The corridor between Monty and Saltillo is so other worldly, and would be pretty if there was not so much smog from the belching smokestacks. through some mountains with lots of agriculture in the verdant valleys .On to the Altiplano of Nuevo Leon and San Luis Potosi. Lots of evidence of the mining past in the scarred hills where you can see the abandoned mine shafts, you can also see the the new mining in various open pit operation visible from the Highway. I also noticed the main food speciality throughout the region seemed to to Cabrito. which is Goat cooked over wood fire "al Pastor" or shepherds style. I saw lots of goats grazing and in the evening when I looked from my hotel to the big cliffs in the background I could see goats nimbly grazing the cliffs . Staying the night in a small old town called Santa Maria Del Rio. And their renown is for making and selling silk Rebozos which are the Shawls that mexican Women traditionally wear. It is amazing how many small stores specialize in them I saw about ten stores on my quick drive through. Tomorrow I drive through El Bajio and Michoacan and on to the coast. As I progress the drive becomes more and more scenic .
