davidjenkins2012 The morning Inbox worries that Sony is already resting on its laurels, as one readers dreams of a modern version of Mercenary. To join in with the discussions yourself email [email protected] Rockstar’s next game So, I guess the big question in gaming has to be, what game do Rockstar plan to release next year? Didn’t they (or Take-Two Interactive to investors) allude earlier in the year to one being released in the second quarter of 2015? At the time no date had been announced for the release of the much anticipated GTA V on new gen or PC and it was thought that that’s what they meant. Obviously it wasn’t! So… it’s got to be either a Red Dead or Bully (Canis Canem Edit) game, Right?! I loved them both, but I hope it’s the latter! Whatever it may be, it’ll no doubt be delayed! What do GC and my fellow readers think/hope for?Mr Anonymous GC: Those are the two most likely games (assuming Agent is basically unknowable at this stage, and very likely cancelled). But it would be very unusual if such big games came out as early as Rockstar’s usual April/May window if we didn’t already know about them now. If anything does come out at that time we think it’s more likely to be Grand Theft Auto V story DLC. Christmas laurels Seeing all these stories about the Xbox One catching up with the PlayStation 4 has been pretty interesting. Particularly when it makes you think what has Sony actually done in the last year? Released no games that anyone cares about (except for one remake of a PS3 game) and one that doesn’t even work. They must’ve seen that Microsoft had a much better Christmas line-up and yet they’ve not reacted to it at all. No unexpected new bundles, no new game announcements, no exclusive DLC or free gifts. Nothing. Somebody at Sony HQ must’ve have literally thought, ‘Well, all we’ve got is a so-so driving game that doesn’t work properly but heck that’ll do!’ It seems to me they’ve got complacent in record time and I don’t really see a bunch of indie games and a Dark Souls spin-off helping them out much. I say this all as a PlayStation 4 owner too, and one that isn’t particularly interested in Forza Horizon 2 and Sunset Overdrive. To be honest, I’m considering getting a Wii U…Mu-Mu No reward So if Super Smash Bros. For Wii U is another an 8 or 9/10 (I’m assuming an 8 is the minimum given that’s what you gave the 3DS version) that’s going to give Nintendo three of the best games (three of the only good games, almost) of the year. And yet still I assume the Wii U is only going to do okay at best. Apparently it’s turning a profit now for them so I guess that’s fine, but to me it just seems unfair. You have things like Assassin’s Creed outselling themselves year after year, even as they get worse and worse, and yet the top rated games often don’t do that well at all. It’s not just Nintendo either, but basically anything that isn’t a franchise or plays identically to one that already is doesn’t seem to have a chance. It’s frustrating to think the good games often don’t get rewarded but the bad games often get away with anything – even not working.Onibee E-mail your comments to: [email protected] Resolution generation This year my hard working Xbox 360 has given me a chance to play for the first time Fallout 3 and Dark Souls. These two games engrossed me with their exceptional gameplay, even if the graphics aren’t new gen. I’ve had a great time on both. At the moment I’m enjoying time on Alien Isolation, Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and Far Cry 4, even though I know these are the swansong for this aged machine. All of these games required installs to play as I guess games are all now hitting the ceiling of what the console is capable of. So the current gen sidles up alongside with its shinier but no more expansive versions of games I already own, but they seem to be plagued with problems at launch – unlike my trusty 360. I love video games and have always wanted to jump on the new gen express when it comes roaring into existence. But this generation of consoles (barring Nintendo, as they exist beyond the generations in their own unique place and the Wii U I’m contemplating as being my first Nintendo console since N64) seem to be offering nothing fresh, just more visual fidelity. I’d like to see the power of these new consoles not being used so much for photorealism or incredibly intricate models (such as the Batmobile in the upcoming Arkham Knight that apparently contains as many polygons as the whole Arkham Asylum game), but for new experiences. Basically, I’m no programming G, I don’t know my OS from my elbow, but I’m sure amazing things are possible on the Xbox One and PS4, bug free and everything. It seems there’s going to be a big AAA glut of style over substance for a while. Where’s the games with amazing new mechanics, like say Crackdown or Dead Rising had back in the day? There’s been nothing like that yet this gen, nothing that says ‘look at what you can do now!’ instead of ‘look at what you can do again, but in 1080p’. The generations have been separated only by resolutions and frame rates for a year now, it will be interesting to see when this new generation finally gets its own identity.8bitOnwards Mercenary suggestion With Elite: Dangerous coming up it made me wonder which of my old Amiga games (I know Elite is older than that, but I’m not) would actually work as an update. Midwinter was so far ahead of its time it basically is every open world game out there already, so I’m not sure that’d have much to gain. Things like Cannon Fodder would never be made as anything but mobile games nowadays, so it seems pointless to suggest that. My choice would be Damocles, which was basically Mercenary II. This was an open world game too but very unusual one at the time, as there was basically no fighting and you were flying around a solar system trying to divert a comet (which is kind of topical at the moment). I’d love to see it with modern graphics and with people you could interact with this time, although not too many so that it keeps the same barren atmosphere as the original.Hammeriron Three words That’s a good point about Pokémon LeafGreen/FireRed only being on Game Boy Advance. If Nintendo were serious about having all the games avaialble on one format why weren’t these games put on the Virtual Console long ago? In fact why is the Virtual Console itself such a farce? Nintendo has the most valuable back catalogue of games ever and they do nothing with them. They won’t even update it with the games that were already on the Wii. And this a company that was suffering from a severe shortage of games for the first year and a half. If only Nintendo would just set up a team to churn out Virtual Console games every week, just think where we’d be. Ugh, how many letters do you get that start ‘If only Nintendo’…Ash GC: A lot. Most of them entirely justified. Unhelpful update Firstly, I think I am addicted to GC! I have to read every instalment! Great stuff, keep up the good work guys! In response to Gary, who was having problems with his PlayStation 4 Internet speeds. I feel your pain, as my PlayStation 4 kept dropping its Internet connection and was really slow downloading stuff. I think this is because of the latest update, as before the 2.0 update and subsequent patches my download speed before was at least 7Mbps, but after it was about 2.5Mbps. I have since set up my Internet again on my PlayStation 4 (I had to do this after the 2.0 update) and it has gone back up to 7Mps. I set everything to automatic for now. until the inevitable patch swings in. I still can’t sign in to the dedicated YouTube app (but can using the Web browser), hopefully my PlayStation 4 Internet connection will be more stable from now on. I didn’t have hardly any problems before the 2.0 update.Cris Leary Catch up on every previous Games Inbox here More than a wobble Well, after trying to be all positive regarding your earlier lament for the year that was, I now find myself struggling to comprehend the glut of technical fiascos this winter season has wrought on the gaming world. Driveclub, broken; Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare, online lag; Halo: The Master Chief Collection, matchmaking not working; Assassin’s Creed Unity, patently unfinished; and then an Alien Isolation patch that fixed one thing and broke some others. Could it be that the increasing ubiquity of online consoles is prompting some publishers and developers to wobble on their definition of a completed product? Disks are being pressed while programmers are writing patches! Or is it just a case of insurmountable technical woes that arise from the conjunction of ever more complex software and the additional headaches of online and server issues? Can we chalk this up to first year teething, or are we in for the first console generation to truly resemble the fumbling world of PC game releases, where paying customers are a mere extension of the QA department? At any rate, I’m really looking forward to your end of year review, but given that it’ll be in the run up to Christmas you’ll have to bookend with it ‘bah, humbug!’Tingle’s Therapist Inbox also-rans Can anyone actually disprove to to me that the best wrestling game is still WWF No Mercy on the N64? A few of the PlayStation 2 games were good as well, but what’s been happening since?!Ishtar So Persona Q comes out on the same day as Pokémon, eh? A whole year almost without any major releases and then two big ones come out on the same day. Why does the games industry always do this? Madness. The Colt This week’s Hot Topic The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Emmet, who asks what’s your favourite map or level in a game? They can be either single-player or multiplayer stages, including race tracks, but they do have to be something defined by the game itself – not just a random portion you happened to like. We want to know why you enjoyed it so much and what the map did better than anything else in the same game, or other similar titles. Do you ever feel map and level creation is an underappreciated skill and what games can you think of that suffered because of poor design? Have you ever tried to make your own maps using an editor, or games like LittleBigPlanet, and how did that turn out?
